Dustin Poirier came into his fight with Jonathan Brookins off a tough submission loss to Chan Sung Jung.  Ironically, Dustin would be able to finish Brookins off tonight with the same move, which was d’arce choke.

Starting off the fight, both fighters were exchanging heavy leather.  Dustin would catch Brookins with some hard shots, but Brookins kept coming.  Brookins would even catch Dustin with some nice combinations, forcing him back up against the cage.

However, it was Poirier who would ultimately clip Brookins, forcing him to shoot in for a take down.  From there, Dustin would lock up the d’arce choke, forcing Brookins to tap.  This puts Dustin right back in the race in the featherweight division, which is currently being reigned by Jose Aldo.

Dustin is one of the most well rounded fighters in the featherweight division, utilizing some powerful punches and is equally dangerous on the ground.  This was on full display tonight.  So what’s next for Poirier?  Chad Mendes was also victorious this weekend, knocking out his opponent within the first round.  Maybe their paths are set to collide, which could determine the next challenger for the featherweight title.

Also, I’m sure Dustin would like to get another crack Chan Sung Jung.  Their first fight was an absolute war, and their second meeting could be equally entertaining.

For now, Poirier puts his name right back in the win column and made his Louisiana state proud.  “The Diamond” proved to be just that against Brookins, and he should get submission of the night for his efforts.
