The tradition of Japanese MMA promotions holding events on New Year’s Eve continues with “Glory Sports International presents DREAM 18 and GLORY 4 Tokyo – New Year’s Eve Special.”
The card will air on the CBS Sports Network from the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, in two separate broadcasts, according to a report by MMA Fighting.com. The first event will be Glory’s 16-man kickboxing tournament on Dec. 31 at 10 p.m. ET. Dream’s fight card will air on Jan. 1 2013 at 10 p.m. ET
The kickboxing tournament itself wills several K-1 World Grand Prix champions like Semmy Schilt, Peter Aerts and Remy Bonjasky as well as legends like Errol Zimmerman.
One competitor who is entering the tournament but does not have a lot of kickboxing experience is Russian fighter Sergei Kharitonov.
Although he only has four kickboxing fights on his record, Kharitonov is no stranger to tournaments, having made it to the semi-finals in both the Pride 2004 Heavyweight Grand Prix and the Strikeforce 2011 Heavyweight Grand-Prix tournaments.
The Dream card features several matches with well-known fighters. Dream champions Bibiano Fernandes and Shinya Aoki will return to the Land of the Rising Sun for the event.
Fernandes faces Deep Bantamweight champion Yoshiro Maeda while Aoki faces American Antonio McKee.
UFC and Pride veteran Phil Baroni will look continue his comeback as he fights Japanese superstar Hayato Sakurai. Former Strikforce Women’s Bantamweight champion Marloes Coenen is also scheduled to face Australian prospect Fiona Muxlow at the event.
