One division that has been lacking in terms of depth has always been the middleweight division. This is partly contributed to the fact that Anderson Silva, who is the greatest fighter in MMA, has been dominant for so many years at this weight class.

The division certainly has been revitalized as of late with such fighters like Chael Sonnen, Tim Boetsch, Chris Weidman and Michael Bisping. Now you can throw Costa Philippou in the mix as he was able to defeat the heavy hitter Boetsch in decisive fashion. It was a sterling performance from Philippou, who trains alongside middleweight contender Weidman.

Currently, Philippou is 12-2 and is on his way to a middleweight title shot if he can continue his winning ways. His only UFC loss was to Nick Catone, where he was unable to stop the take down. Since then, he has won five straight and his take down defense has vastly improved, making him a legitimate contender in the middleweight division.

Costa is maybe one or two wins away from a title shot and it appears he wants to keeping climbing the ladder. In a recent interview with MMA Weekly, Costa talked about his future with the UFC.

“To be honest I don’t want to fight that soon, I still need some time to recover from my fight, and some time off to relax, but I’m definitely looking at the Brian Stann/Wanderlei Silva fight. I’d like to fight one of those guys if possible,” he said.

Both fights would be excellent for Costa’s progression as an MMA fighter and a win would leave no doubt that he is a viable challenger for Silva.
