MMA Opinion: Tito Ortiz is right, ‘Cyborg’ Santos should get tuneup fight

While UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey prepares to defend her title against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157, there is one female fighter who is waiting to get her chance to fight in the octagon.

Former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is currently in contract negotiations with the UFC. One person helping her is her manager, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion and Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz.

Although fans, the UFC and everyone else around the world is hoping for Santos to fight Rousey, Ortiz is determined to have his client fight in a tuneup bout before she fights for the championship.  In an interview with MMAJunkie.com, Ortiz said he wants the Cyborg to “get warmed up and be comfortable in the UFC.”

“[Rousey] got a tuneup fight, and she’s in the main event, So I think ‘Cyborg’ deserves a tuneup fight.”

I agree with Ortiz that Santos should get a fight before she thinks about facing Rousey, especially since she has never fought at 135 pounds. In the interview Ortiz said Santos “walks around at 170” and is not going through a trial cut.

Although this may seem like a risk since Santos would most likely lose her shot at Rousey if she lost a tuneup fight,  a successful test run of the weight cut she would have to make would make Cyborg the most dangerous fighter at 135. There are few fighters in the division who could match the Cyborg’s power.

If Santos and Ortiz are able to successfully negotiate with the UFC, it may only be a few months until we see Santos in the octagon. The question is, who will step up to face her?
