Luke Rockhold needs to beat Vitor Belfort if he wants UFC title shot
Less than a week after defeating Michael Bisping, former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort will face a new fighter who has never fought inside of the octagon.
At the UFC on Fox 6 press conference, president Dana White said Belfort’s next opponent may be Luke Rockhold, the last Strikeforce Middleweight champion.
Although the fight is not set in stone, Belfort would be a great opponent to welcome the Strikeforce champion. Rockhold, like so many middleweight fighters after they get a victory, has voiced his desire to fight UFC Middleweight champion Anderson Silva.
While Strikeforce Lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is getting a shot Benson Henderson’s 155-pound belt, Melendez has the record and fight résumé to assert his status as a top contender. Rockhold will be immortalized as Strikeforce’s last middleweight champion, he has never stepped foot inside of the octagon nor has he foot an opponent the caliber of the Phenom.
He did defeat Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza for the belt and made successful title defenses against Keith Jardine and Tim Kennedy, but none of them are the level of Silva. Jardine was a beast back when he was a light heavyweight, but when he had fought Rockhold, he had only won two out of his eight fights.
If Rockhold can beat Belfort, he would be a step closer to getting a title shot against Silva. However Belfort could once again play spoiler and shatter Rockhold’s title aspirations, just as he did Bisping.
