Jessica Eye is next star in Bellator’s women’s division
Jessica “Evil” Eye scored the biggest win of her mixed martial arts career after she defeated Bellator 115-pound women’s champion Zolia “The Warrior Princess” Gurgel by technical submission in the first round.
Eye, who is currently 9-1 and ranked the No. 1 strawweight fighter in the world, is set to face prospect Munah “The Perfect Storm” Holland in April. With women’s MMA moving into a new era, Eye has a chance to become the face of the Bellator women’s division.
Although Bellator has not officially set a date for a women’s flyweight tournament, they featured three different women’s 125-pound fights in the previous season. With the UFC seemingly establishing a women’s division, Spike TV and Viacom might be able to persuade the promotion into creating a solid women’s flyweight division to try and match the UFC’s budding women’s 135-pound weight class. With her skills inside of the cage and her charisma outside of competition, Eye could become a fan-favorite.
Eye went 4-0 in 2012. In addition to her win over Gurgel, she earned decision victories over Kelly Warren, Anita Rodriguez and Angela Magana. Her upset over the Bellator champion earned her two Ohio MMA Awards in the “Submission of the Year” and “Story of the Year” categories.
Eye, who is currently riding a six-fight winning streak, will certainly face a challenge in the Perfect Storm. Prior to her loss to Michelle Ould, Holland had two straight second-round knockouts over Carina Damm and Marianna Kheyfets. Still, Evil has the experience and cardio to go the distance with Holland.
If Eye defeats Holland, she be more than qualified to fight in a future Bellator tournament. She may even get a rematch against Gurgel in the opening round.
