UFC 156: Main Card Predictions
UFC 156 kicks off this weekend and features a stacked card from top to bottom. A featherweight championship takes place between Frankie Edgar and current champ Jose Aldo. This fight essentially is a super-fight, so fans are waiting in anticipation to see what will happen when these elite athletes square off.
Also, Rashad Evans will be looking to rebound off a tough loss to Jon Jones, and he will be doing so against a veteran in Rodrigo Nogueira. Nogueira has been a competent light heavyweight for some time now, and a win over Rashad would be his biggest to date. Let’s now take a look at the rest of the card and make some predictions.
125: Ian McCall vs. Joseph Benavidez- Starting off the card, a flyweight bout takes place between McCall and Benavidez. Both of these fighters are trying to make their back to a championship fight, which increases the stakes. Joseph Benavidez possesses the better wrestling and submissions in this match up, and this will work in his favor. McCall is very game, but Benavidez possesses a better well-rounded game. He will take McCall down on numerous occasions, earning a decision. Final prediction: Joseph Benavidez wins via unanimous decision.
170: Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia-This intriguing welterweight bout is a grappler’s fantasy match up as both fighters are the best at what they do. Demian Maia has looked impressive since dropping down to welterweight, but he faces a stern test against perennial contender Jon Fitch. If Maia wants to win, he will need to get top control and work his jiu jitsu game, which is world class. Maia will get the job done and force Fitch out of his comfort zone. Fitch is virtually unsubmittable, but Maia will control him for three rounds. Final Prediction: Demian Maia wins via unanimous decision.
265: Alistair Overeem vs. Antonio Silva-A heavyweight match up might determine who’s next in line to face Cain Velasquez for the belt. Overeem possesses the superior striking in this bout, and Silva is the better grappler. They both are massive fighters, but Overeem has more experience and has fought some of the best. Overeem will avoid being taken down by Silva, and he will clip Silva with some knees and punches. Final prediction: Alistair Overeem wins via TKO in the first round.
205: Rashad Evans vs. Rodrigo Nogueira- Evans and Nogueira will go to war this weekend in hopes of getting a UFC title shot. Rashad comes into this fight with the superior wrestling and he is also the faster fighter. Rashad will couple his striking with take downs and he will wear down Nogueira for the majority of each round. Final Prediction: Rashad Evans wins via TKO in the third round.
Main Event (Lightweight Championship) 155: Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo- A super fight takes place between Aldo and Edgar, who both are some of the best in the UFC right now. Jose Aldo possesses some serious leg kicks, which have left his opponents badly damaged over the years. Frankie Edgar is a former lightweight champion and has gone against some of the best such as B.J. Penn and Gray Maynard. Edgar is the better wrestler in this match up, but Aldo seems virtually impossible to take down unless he gets tired. This is the strategy that Edgar will take and it will be a success. Edgar will survive the earlier attack of Aldo, and he will mix in take downs to steal each round. It will be a war, but Edgar will prove to be the better conditioned fighter, which will earn him his second championship with the UFC. Final Prediction: Frankie Edgar wins via unanimous decision.
