The UFC has announced that an official rankings list will be produced next month, as it partners up with FightMetric. This will allow fans of the sport the chance to see a list of the top fighters in each division as well as a pound for pound fighter ranking.
FightMetric is the world’s most notable MMA statistics organization, and will allow certain members of the media to decide the rankings via a vote, immediately after each event.
Creator of FightMetric, Rami Genauer said:
“We are thrilled to have UFC recognize our fighter rankings and to have them hosted on UFC.com, as well as incorporated into event broadcasts,”
“FightMetric has worked closely with the UFC for several years as an industry-leader in MMA statistics. Sports fans are accustomed to seeing performance data and rankings on their favorite baseball, football and soccer players, and now we can engage UFC fans on a similar level.”
Hopefully UFC fans won’t have to worry about dodgy media choices affecting the sport too much though, as the UFC stated that the ranking aren’t likely to interfere with potential match ups. But it has also not completely ruled out the possibility.
UFC President Dana White also spoke out on the news:
”We always look for opportunities to engage fans and media, allowing them to connect and voice their opinions, and this just one more way of doing that.”
“UFC Fighter Rankings are a great tool for new and existing fans alike to learn and better keep up with the fast pace of the UFC,”
It will be news that will divide the opinions of UFC fans. How much trust can be placed on these rankings? One worry is that the rankings could gather importance over time, and certain areas of the sport be decided thanks to the media.
