Demian Maia successfully defeated Jon Fitch tonight which was a compelling welterweight bout.  This matchup essentially was the world class jiu jitsu finisher in Maia against the durable submission defense artist in Jon Fitch.  Maia would prove to be too much for Jon, earning a unanimous decision.

It was a sterling performance from Maia as Jon Fitch has been considered the second best welterweight in the UFC for many years now.    This was his third successful win in the welterweight division, and he is making some serious waves with his elite grappling prowess.  From the beginning of the first round, Maia would take Jon down at will.  He would control back mount for the majority of the round, threatening with rear-naked chokes.  Fitch had no answer.

Maia would to the exact same for rounds two and three, and what was amazing in this fight was his ability to take Jon down at will, who is a competent wrestler.  Fitch would put up a fight, however, getting him in a guillotine near the end of the third round.  Maia would survive the late attack from Fitch, proving to be too much for the durable Fitch.

This weight class suits Demian Maia perfectly as he can finally compete with guys that are smaller, so he has the strength to utilize his world class jiu jitsu game.  The final round would end with Maia taking  Jon down, cementing his status as being the next big thing in the welterweight division.  Look at George St. Pierre, we have a new contender.
