The feud between Vinny Magalhaes and Phil Davis seems to be growing. Earlier this month, both fighters would exchange some words via Twitter. Vinny even went on The MMA Hour and described how he felt about Phil Davis’s skills.
“His ground game is horrible. All the guys he’s submitted don’t have any ground game, so I don’t know why he thinks that he can submit me.”
Vinny is a Jiu Jitsu NO Gi World Champion, and is the premier submission specialist in the light heavyweight division. It is apparent that he is not overly impressed with Phil Davis’s body of work in the UFC, and he believes he has what it takes to end the fight if it hits the ground. Vinny has over eight submissions on his record, so he is more than capable of submitting Phil if the opportunity arises. However, Phil is one of the best wrestlers in the division, so taking him down is easier said than done.
Both fighters are expected to go to war, which should be an intriguing grappling match up. Vinny was unsuccessful in his UFC debut, getting TKO’d by Ryan Bader at TUF finale. He is currently on a six-fight winning streak, and a win over Davis would be his biggest to date.
Davis has only lost once in his UFC tenure to Rashad Evans, but he would rebound with a submission over Wagner Prado. Will Phil Davis be able to keep the fight on the feet against Vinny? Or, will Vinny prove he is the superior grappler when these two square off? Stay tuned!
