Alistair Overeem does not deserve title shot
Everyone was talking about how Alistair Overeem is going to be next in line for Cain Velasquez. Oh sure, we were all so excited about that prospect. However, that was before his epic loss to Antonio Big Foot Silva at UFC 156.
I was in absolute shock and awe when I saw Overeem go down like some two-bit amateur. Overeem is better than that. Silva is nowhere near as skilled a fighter as Overeem, he is just big and strong and quiet massive, even for a heavyweight fighter. Overeem did not take that match as seriously as he should have, and he got his faced smashed like so many rotten tomatoes on my ex’s hatchback.
I know we already saw what happened when Silva and Velasquez first met. Velasquez destroyed him and left him a bloody mess. Silva did show improvement with his standup when he defeated Overeem, but he should not be next in line for a title shot either.
I give all the credit in the world for what he did to Overeem at UFC 156, but he is not ready to face Velasquez yet. Silva still needs to prove a bit more in the heavyweight division. Maybe have Silva take on Junior Dos Santos or Ben Rothwell, before he can be considered a contender for Velasquez. One win over a careless Overeem is not going to be enough, but Silva certainly proved some amount of worth.
As for Overeem, if he took his match with Silva more seriously and dominated him like he should’ve, then he would deserve to be the next in line for Velasquez.
