Ronda Rousey is a star whether she wins or loses
There is no denying that Ronda “Rowdy” Rousey, current UFC Women’s Bantamweight champion is currently one of the biggest stars in mixed martial arts. In the past year she has graced the cover of dozens of magazines and appeared on many TV programs.
As Rousey prepares to defend her title against Liz Carmouche at UFC 157, there is speculation that if the champion drops the belt to Carmouche, the already growing women’s division will be dropped.
Even if Rousey loses her title to Carmouche, the UFC women’s division will be fine as will Rousey’s career. Most champions who have lost their titles have been able to rebound from defeat. Former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Randy Couture had lost the title to Vitor Belfort and then won it back in their rematch. Back in December 2012, Cain Velasquez defeated Junior Dos Santos, the main who defeated him one year earlier, to win the heavyweight title.
In Rousey’s case, a loss to Carmouche would be the first loss in her short career. Her next match would be against any of the women fighters recently signed by the UFC or against an up-and-coming fighter who could be signed by Zuffa in the future.
Like many fighters, Rousey’s fanbase is solid and loyal. If she were to lose her title, she would still be a hero in their eyes.
