An important welterweight bout is being targeted between former Strikeforce champions Jake Shields and Tyron Woodley. This news comes via MMAJunkie.com. This bout is tentatively scheduled to take place at UFC 161, but both fighters have yet to sign a contract. If this bout is indeed booked, it will project the winner high up the welterweight rankings, where George St. Pierre has been so dominant over the years.
Jake Shields competed in the welterweight division when he first signed with the UFC, but found mixed results, and even got knocked out by Jake Ellenberger in devastating fashion. However, before this fight, he challenged challenge George St. Pierre for his title and put up a valiant effort. After his welterweight stint, moved up to middleweight to face Ed Herman.
Shields proved to be too much for Herman in the grappling department, but the win was overturned due to a failed drug test. Shields has battled a lot of problems as of late, and a win over Woodley would get him right back into the mix.
Tyron Woodley is coming off an emphatic KO win over Jay Hieron which only lasted a few seconds. It certainly proved that Woodley can be an exciting fighter that has the wrestling to take the fight wherever he wants. Woodley still has an impressive record at 11-1, and has only lost to Nate Marquardt. A win over Jake Shields would be his biggest win, and proves that he can hang with the best of them.
