Wanderlei Silva went to war with Brian Stann tonight at UFC on Fuel TV 8, which took place in Japan. Fans are accustomed to seeing Wanderlei throw caution to the wind, and this is exactly what happened tonight. It was a Silva performance almost reminiscent of his Pride career. Silva and Stann exchanged blows, forcing both men to the canvas on numerous occasions.
It wasn’t until the second round that Silva was able to hurt Stann for good. After rocking him with a barrage of punches, Silva put the coffin nails in. The ref was forced to stop the top in the second round, giving Silva an impressive knockout victory over a durable and heavy-hitting Stann.
Both fighters needed a win as they both were coming off narrow losses. They certainly made up for the other fights on the card that went to decisions, save for the Mark Hunt vs. Stefan Struve bout. Silva has now won three out of his last five bouts, resurrecting his MMA career in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.
For Stann, it was a valiant effort put up on his part, and he even almost finished Silva on several occasions. However, Silva weathered the storm, and struck when the opening presented itself. Stann will surely win a Fight of the Night bonus along with Silva, so he doesn’t have to worry about his job being on the line. He is a fan favorite, and it’s performances like these that make fans want to see him fight.
Congrats to both men as they put on a thrilling show for the fans in attendance.
