UFC on Fuel TV 8 featured a compelling middleweight bout between Yushin Okami and Hector Lombard. Both fighters were looking to move up the middleweight ladder in hopes of getting a title shot. It was a great bout from both fighters, but Okami did enough in rounds one and two to earn a split decision.
From the opening bell, Okami showed he can avoid the power shots of Lombard, landing some good jabs. He even took Lombard down on numerous occasions in rounds one. He did the same in round two, forcing Lombard to dig deep. Lombard stormed back, however, in round three and hurt Okami, sending him backward. Okami survived and clinched up with Lombard.
Round three was all Lombard, but Okami looked impressive in rounds one and two. He is now on a three fight winning streak and it looks like he will move up the middleweight ladder. Maybe one more win could put himself in title contention. Okami now has 13 wins in the UFC, which is quite impressive, to say the least.
For Lombard, it was too little too late and he is now 1-2 in his UFC tenure. It will be interesting to see if the UFC cuts him because he has only looked impressive against Rousimar Palhares. Lombard has the potential to knock out any person that is put in front of him, but at times he just looks lackadaisical. Hector doesn’t look to storm his opponents until it’s too late, which was the case tonight. Congrats to Yushin Okami.
