A bantamweight title fight is set to take place between Eddie Wineland and interim champ Renan Barao. This news comes via Eddie Wineland’s Twitter feed.
“Cats out of the bag apparently…UFC 161 main event!!! For the interim belt vs Renan Barao. GAME TIME!!! All aboard the pain train!!” he said.
This is huge news for Wineland as he will get the chance to become once again a bantamweight champion. He was the first ever WEC bantamweight champion until he was dethroned by Chase Beebe. Since coming into the UFC, Wineland has amassed a record of 2-2, beating the likes of Brad Pickett and Scott Jorgensen. He is one of the most powerful punchers in the division and is one of the best boxers. If there is any fighter to give Barao a run for his money in the stand up department, it’s Wineland.
Barao comes into this title fight off an impressive submission victory over the heavy-hitter Michael McDonald. It was a sterling victory for him and cemented his status as being one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet. It was thought that Barao would challenge Dominick Cruz to unify the belt, but it looks like the UFC wants to keep Barao busy until Cruz can successfully heal from his ACL injuries.
Both fighters are known for their exciting styles, so it should be a real treat for UFC fans. The winner will be able to challenge Cruz to unify the belts, which should take place sometime next year.
