A middleweight title fight is in the works between Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva, which might take place at UFC 162. This news comes via Mark La Monica’s Twitter page.
This is huge news for Weidman as he has been campaigning for this fight for some time now. In interviews in the past, he declared that Silva was ducking him to find easier fights. Silva responded, saying that Weidman doesn’t have a big name in MMA right now and that he’s just a boy. Now it looks like the bout is finally going to happen and it will be a compelling middleweight championship.
Weidman is coming off a destruction over Mark Munoz, where he was able to land a vicious elbow on the feet that sent Munoz to the canvas. Weidman has always shown to be dominate on the ground, but it looks like his stand up skills are developing quite nicely with every fight he has. This will come in handy against Silva because he is one of the most accurate and dynamic strikers in the UFC.
Silva is also coming off a destruction of Stephan Bonnar, where he landed a flying knee to the body of Bonnar, forcing the bout to be stopped. Silva is undefeated inside the UFC and has 13 consecutive wins. A win over Weidman would certainly be huge and might even coerce Silva to move up in weight and fight Jon Jones in what would be a huge super-fight.
