Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz is the headlining fight for UFC 158 this Saturday at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The fight is on home turf for St-Pierre, who was born in Saint-Isidore-de-Clifton, Quebec, and fights out of Montreal.
These two fighters could not be further apart on the fighter spectrum if they tried, which is what will make this match so intriguing to watch.
St-Pierre is a disciplined fighter who takes his training seriously and is very well-rounded when it comes to takedowns, striking and submissions. Diaz is more of a striker, although he is well versed in both takedowns and submissions as well training with Cesar Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
However, Diaz is keener to keep the fight on his feet and throw punches rather than find himself on the mat with any opponent. His skill lies with getting into the minds of his opponents (laying down the groundwork before and finishing the mental takedown during fights) with an abundance of smack-talk and flashing of his middle finger(s).
Although I believe that St-Pierre could definitely overpower Diaz physically, I think the deciding factor in this fight will be whether Diaz can get or has already gotten into St-Pierre’s head. As disciplined as St-Pierre is, that will be hard to tell up until the time of the fight itself and, perhaps, when the winner is announced, as I think that is the only advantage that Diaz will have over St-Pierre.
Whatever the outcome, this will surely be a fight to watch as it I’m sure it will be one of the more entertaining matches of the evening.
