UFC 158 featured a dynamic welterweight bout between heavy-hitters Nate Marquardt and Jake Ellenberger. Coming into this fight, it was well known that Jake was looking to land something huge early on, and that’s exactly what he did.
In the first round, Nate would land some good leg kicks, forcing Jake to readjust. Jake would weather the early storm of Nate and would connect with his own power shots. It was enough to send Nate to the canvas. The ref was forced to step in as Nate didn’t answer the heavy shots from Jake.
Jake Ellenberger is now on a two fight winning streak, putting his name right up there with the best of them in the welterweight division. Ellenberger is often overlooked in this division, but he is arguably the heaviest puncher save for maybe Johny Hendricks. A win over Marquardt is a huge feather in his cap as Nate is an experienced fighter with heavy hands in his own right.
Now on a two fight winning streak, Jake has the chance to take his fighting career to another level. He will more than likely get a top 5 opponent in the division, which could result in a title shot if he is able to come out victorious. Some potential match ups for him include the loser of the Johny Hendricks vs. Carlos Condit fight, Tarec Saffiedine, or maybe even Tyron Woodley. Whoever Jake Ellenberger faces, they better watch out for his power because he has shown heavy hands time and time again.
