UFC 158 featured a co-main event welterweight bout between Johny Hendricks and Carlos Condit. Dana White said in previous interviews that the winner of this bout would get the next crack at Georges St. Pierre or Nick Diaz; whoever comes out the victor in their title fight. Hendricks was the man to come out the victor tonight, earning a unanimous decision over the always-dangerous Carlos Condit.
In his hard-fought victory, Johny executed a lot of take downs He would also land some heavy shots on Carlos, forcing him back against the cage. Carlos was not out of it, however, and landed some good kicks and punches of his own. It was an absolute war for three rounds that showed Johny take Carlos down on numerous occasions, which ultimately allowed him to become the new number one contender in the welterweight division.
Johny is now on a six fight winning streak, beating a who’s who of the welterweight division. His notable wins thus far are over Carlos Condit, Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Martin Kampmann. The only man that is left for him to beat is Georges St. Pierre, who is the best pound-for-pound welterweight, and maybe fighter, in the world.
Props to Condit as well for entertaining the fans with his flashy kicks and dynamic combinations. Regardless of the loss, he will remain a fan favorite as he is always looking to press the action and finish the fight both on the ground and on the feet. Congrats to Johny, becoming the next challenger for the title.
