UFC on Fuel TV 9: Pablo Garza Versus Diego Brandao Has ‘Fight of the Night’ Potential

Eric Bolte-USA Today Sports

In one of the most overlooked fights on the main card of UFC on Fuel TV 9, Pablo Garza takes on Diego Brandao in a featherweight bout.

This fight between two dynamic strikers certainly has potential to be awarded “Fight of the Night.”

Garza is coming off a huge upset victory over Mark Hominick at UFC 154. Coming in as a large underdog, “The Scarecrow” used his 6-foot-1 frame and significant reach advantage to pick apart Hominick for three rounds on his way to a unanimous decision victory. In beating the former featherweight contender, Garza looked in top form and appeared to be a future contender for the featherweight title.

Brandao, however, possesses both the power and aggressive fighting style to take down the larger Garza.

Brandao recently spoke about the importance of his upcoming fight against Garza with MMACrazyTV.com. “The UFC is putting me up for a test against Pablo Garza,” Brandao said. “Whoever wins this fight is going to be Top 10. I want to be Top 10.”

Brandao, who has finished his opponents in 14 of his 15 MMA wins, promises to seek another impressive stoppage against Garza.

“[Garza] is a very dangerous fighter. This will be a true Fight of the Night,” Brandao said. “If he keeps the fight [standing], I will knock him out Mike Tyson style.”

Garza is sure to use his six-inch height advantage to keep Brandao on the outside. When Brandao gets desperate and lunches inside, Garza will look to exercise his deadly clinch and punish Brandao with elbows and knees on the inside.

The loser in this outstanding matchup can at least look forward to receiving a hefty “Fight of the Night” bonus check as consolation.

Dana White Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor Can Beat Rafael dos Anjos

Things are getting interesting ahead of UFC 196. The headlining fight at that March 5 pay-per-view event will see UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor move up to lightweight to face the champion of that division Rafael dos Anjos. If McGregor succeeds he will become the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two different divisions simultaneously. The oddsmakers have McGregor as the favorite ahead of the fight. UFC president Dana White doesn’t necessarily hold the same opinion.
