UFC featherweights Diego Brandao and Pablo Garza went to war today in the octogan on Fuel TV 9 card. Both fighters looked to exchange early in the round, but Brandao took the fight to the mat and sunk in a arm triangle in the first round. It was a much needed win for Brandao, and he is now 3-1 in the UFC.
Early in the fight, Garza would show that he is a threat on the feet, using his range quite nicely. However, Brandao would wait until the opportunity presented itself and took the fight to the ground. From there, Brandao would work until and arm triangle opened up. It was a sterling performance from Brandao, and he is right back on track in this competitive featherweight division.
For Garza, he now has lost three out of his last four fights and may be in jeopardy of losing his job. Garza has always shown an excellent stand up game, and he will have to shore up his grappling deficiencies if he ever wants to be a contender in the UFC.
Brandao will more than likely get a top fighter match-up in the division. A bout with Dustin Poirier seems like the most logical at this point in his career. Both are known for their stand up game and ability to finish fights on the ground, so it would make for an entertaining bout.
Whoever Brandao faces, it’s clear that training at Team Jackson has benefited his career and he is only getting better with each fight.
