Matt Mitrione Suspended by UFC For Fallon Fox Comments
UFC heavyweight fighter Matt Mitrione has reportedly been suspended for his comments, which were in regard to transgender fighter Fallon Fox. On the MMA Hour, Mitrione said the following:
“That is a lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak, and I mean that. Because you lied on your license to beat up women. That’s disgusting. You should be embarrassed yourself. And the fact that Florida licensed him because California licensed him or whoever the hell did it, it’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that.”
The UFC responded with the following:
“The organization finds Mr Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and — as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated.”
This is devastating news for Mitrione and his fans, as this will likely put him out of action for a while. What Mitrione said was pretty disrespectful, and he should have held back his comments, since his conversation with Ariel Helwani was being aired on live radio. Sure, he has the right to voice his opinions about the situation with Fox, but not in this manner.
Fox is a transgender fighter who has been fighting in women’s MMA, and a lot of fans have mixed feelings about the situation. On one side, there is support for Fox because fans believe she has the right to compete in a women’s sport, and Fox has even shown documentation about her surgeries, claiming that there is no significant advantage once she steps inside the cage.
On the other side, fans feel that Fox indeed does have a distinct advantage in the cage, since she once had the body frame of a man and her strength may still remain from when she was a man.
It’s nice to see the UFC handle this matter quickly and appropriately, and it shows a lot about the behavior and comments that they are willing to tolerate from fighters outside the cage. Hopefully, Mitrione will realize he was in the wrong and go forward with his fighting career.
