The UFC is trying to book a meaningful welterweight bout between Tarec Saffiedine and Robbie Lawler for UFC on FOX 8. Both of these fighters were previously employed under the Strikeforce banner, where Saffiedine was actually the last welterweight champ.
In the last Strikeforce event, Saffiedine challenged Nate Marquardt for the title. Saffiedine executed a brilliant game plan each round, landing numerous leg kicks and defending the take down quite nicely. At the end, it was apparent the Saffiedine got the better of the striking battle, and he earned a unanimous decision.
Saffiedine is now 14-3 in his fighting career, and he has beat some quality opponents in Marquardt, Scott Smith, Brock Larson and Roger Bowling.
Lawler has already found success inside the UFC, and defeated Josh Koscheck in impressive fashion in his latest bout. Coming into the Koscheck bout, it was apparent that Lawler would have to keep the fight standing. Much to his delight, he was able to thwart a take down from Koscheck and landed a devastating shot. The ref was forced to step in, and Lawler resurrected his fighting career at just the perfect time.
Lawler possesses the superior knockout power in this bout, but has had cardio issues in the past. This isn’t the case with Saffiedine, which was clearly evident in has latest title fight. Saffiedine may want to take this fight to the ground in this one as Lawler never has been the best wrestler.
The winner will move up in the welterweight mix in hopes of eventually challenging for a title.
