UFC on Fox 7 takes place this weekend, and features a featherweight bout between top contenders Darren Elkins and Chad Mendes. Up for stake is a chance to claim a number one contender spot in the division, where Jose Aldo is currently the champion.
In terms of styles, both of these fighters share similar traits. Each has competent wrestling and can end the fight standing. This bout may come down to who wants it the most, making this an entertaining bout to watch.
Coming into this fight, Mendes sports an overall record of 13-1. His lone loss came at the hand of Aldo, who was able to land a devastating knee in the first round. From that point on, Mendes would win two straight against Cody McKenzie and Yaotzin Meza. In both bouts, Mendes would showcase his power, which always makes him a threat against any opponent he squares off against.
One of the hottest prospects in the featherweight division right now is Elkins. He is currently on a five fight winning streak, and has beat some quality opponents in Steven Siler, Michihiro Omigawa and Diego Brandao. Now, Elkins has the chance to knock off a top contender in the division, which would certainly warrant a title shot. Elkins likes to use his relentless pressure to force his opponents back, and his smothering top control breaks his opponents throughout the course of the fight.
This bout should be a barn-burner and certainly could grant the winner a title shot if they win in impressive fashion.
