The UFC heavyweight division certainly has gotten a lot deeper in terms of fighters over the years. Among all of the heavyweights, Cain Velasquez is the best and has proven it once again when he regained his belt after defeating Junior Dos Santos in impressive fashion. Now, Velasquez will be taking on Antonio Silva, which will be a rematch where Velasquez was able to dominate the first time round.
Daniel Cormier, training partner and wrestling coach of Cain Velasquez, believes the second fight will be much like the first. In an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Cormier shared his thoughts about Velasquez vs. Silva 2:
“I don’t envision this fight going any differently than the first fight. I think Cain is going to take him out pretty good. But, Bigfoot has put himself in a situation where he deserves his title shot.”
Cormier has been training with Velasquez for years now, and he knows the type of power and determination that Velasquez has. In their first meeting, Velasquez took Silva down almost immediately and landed some devastating shots that would eventually cut Silva open. From there, it was pretty much over and he would get the TKO stoppage in the first round, leaving Silva bloodied and beaten. It was almost reminiscent of a horror movie scene.
It will be interesting to see if Velasquez employs the same strategy against a very dangerous Silva, who was able to knock out Alistair Overeem in the third round of their bout. Velasquez has been knocked out before by JDS, so he will need to look sharp in his bout with Silva if he wants to remain the heavyweight champion.
