A UFC heavyweight bout between Josh Barnett and Frank Mir has been booked for UFC 164. This news comes from UFC’s Twitter page:
This will be Barnett’s first fight in the UFC since 2002. Barnett always had a rocky relationship with the UFC, which is why he took his talents to Pride. In his Pride tenure, he would defeat some quality opponents before he transitioned to Strikeforce. Since the UFC bought out Strikeforce, now it looks like he will finally end his career in the UFC, and he has a competent opponent to welcome him back.
For Mir, this fight gives him a chance to get back in action against a durable vet. His latest performance didn’t turn out to be spectacular as Daniel Cormier was able to control him in the clinch each round. However, his cardio looked improved which is a testament to training with Greg Jackson on a regular basis.
On paper, this should be a very intriguing grappling match between the two. Mir, known as one of the best submission artists in the heavyweight division, was able to submit Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, which is just a testament to the kind of finishing abilities he has on the ground. Barnett is more known for his catch-wrestling where he tries to dominate the top position in hopes of something opening up.
So who will come out the victor when these two heavyweights collide? Stay tuned!
