Erick Silva was a man on a mission tonight as he was coming off a dominating defeat to perennial contender Jon Fitch. In the first round, Silva showed great patience against Jason High, who has been on an impressive run in his fighting career. High would try to get a takedown, but Silva stuffed it nicely and then quickly took the back.
Then, he would lock on a triangle/armbar position, forcing High to tap in the first round. It was a sterling performance from Silva, and it couldn’t have come at a better time as he was fighting in his home country (Brazil). Now, Silva reasserts himself in this heavily competitive welterweight division, which is currently being reigned by Georges St. Pierre.
Silva has always shown impressive skills standing, having the power to knock any man out via his kicks and punches. But it’s good to see him show his ground skills as he is becoming one of the most dangerous fighters in this division. All that needed work was his takedown defense, and it looks like his training has been paying off in dividends, as High is a very competent wrestler and wasn’t able to secure any takedowns.
For High, it’s unfortunate because he was on an impressive winning streak and he was hoping to make a statement in Brazil against a dangerous Silva. For Silva, he will more than likely get a top-profile fight, where he has the chance to build up some momentum again in hopes of getting a title shot. Whoever the UFC matches Silva up against, they better come prepared for a war, whether it’s standing or on the ground.
