UFC on Fuel TV 10 featured an important heavyweight bout between top contenders Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. For Werdum, he was trying to maintain his top-three spot in the division, where Nogueira was trying to prove he still can compete with the best of them in this division. The former proved to be too much, as Werdum was able to submit Nogueira in the second round via armbar.
In the first round, both fighters looked to exchange on the feet. Nogueira was having great success at pressuring Werdum against the cage. Werdum would take Nogueira down and work his jiu jitsu, but was not able to get the finish in the first round. However, in the second, Nogueira was able to eventually take the back. From there, Nogueira was able to lock on an armbar, and Nogueira was forced to tap out verbally. Now, Werdum is more than likely going to face the winner of the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior Dos Santos three championship bout.
For Nogueira, he is more than likely done fighting. There is no shame to losing to Werdum, as he is one of the best grapplers in the world in any division. He will always be a Pride legend, putting on wars with many elite fighters. For Werdum, he can only go up from this bout. It was an excellent way to cap off the night for the fans.
Tonight was an incredible night for Brazilian fans, as there were over eight submissions, which is a record for any UFC event. That’s a wrap! Congrats for Werdum!
