UFC 162 features an important featherweight bout between Frankie Edgar and Charles Oliveira. Both fighters are looking to win in impressive fashion in hopes of putting their name in the hat to challenge for the title, which is currently held by pound-for-pound great Jose Aldo.
Edgar is looking to rebound from his latest loss to Aldo, which was a very competitive affair — one in which many believe he did enough to warrant a decision. The judges ultimately sided with Aldo, but Edgar certainly has a lot to hang his hat on. He is the former lightweight champion of the world — Edgar put on a brilliant performance, twice, against B.J. Penn.
He would then go to war with Gray Maynard, and he got the TKO in their third meeting. Finally, his two bouts with Ben Henderson were both equally close, but the judges awarded the decision to Henderson. If there was ever a time to get a win, now is the time for Edgar. A win saves his chance at fighting for a championship again, and he will have to do it against a very game Oliveira. Edgar has now lost three straight fights, and it would be virtually impossible for him to fight for a title if he loses another.
Oliveira comes into this fight with an overall record of 16-3-1. He has beat some quality opponents in Jonathan Brookins, Darren Elkins and Efrain Escudero. Going against Edgar, Oliveira will need to fight the perfect fight, as this will be his biggest challenge to date. He has an exceptional grappling game, and his striking has improved over the years. If he wants to beat Edgar, he will need to let everything go and look to finish the fight quickly because Edgar seems to thrive in the latter rounds.
