Chris Weidman Becomes A Star At UFC 162
When people think of great fighters in MMA, Anderson Silva is among the first name they spit out.
Silva is one of the most feared strikers ever to compete in the UFC, and he has finished opponent after opponent for years now. However, nothing last forever, and this is certainly true in the fighting world. Coming into this fight, Silva was arguably facing his sternest test to date in Chris Weidman.
Weidman came into this bout with a perfect 9-0 record, and he was the best wrestling/ jiu jitsu practitioner Silva has ever faced. Many people could see Weidman using these tools to defeat the greatest fighter on the planet, but the end result was stunning. After Silva lost the first round, he came into the second acting arrogant and taunting Weidman, much like his fights with Demian Maia, Thales Leites, and Patrick Cote.
Finally, this arrogance caught up with him, as Weidman was able to extend his left hook, sending Silva to the canvas. He followed it up with some coffin-nail punches, becoming the new middleweight champion of the world.
The ending was picture-perfect for Weidman. In the biggest fight of his life, he delivered one of the most impressive upsets the fighting community has ever seen. It certainly had the aura of the Fabricio Werdum vs. Fedor Emelianenko upset. With this impressive win, Weidman becomes an instant star.
He did what no other man could do inside the UFC to Anderson Silva in not only defeating him, but knocking him out cold. Congrats to Chris Weidman. This was a long time coming and he never fought with fear, which is what it takes to defeat champions like Silva.
