Invicita FC 6 kicks off this weekend, which features a pivotal women’s bantamweight bout between Cristiane Santos and Marloes Coenen. Both of these fighters are some of the best in the women’s division, and a win would be monumental for their fighting career. Even more, this bout will be a rematch, where Cyborg was able to win by TKO back in 2010.
Coming into this bout, Cyborg sports an overall record of 11-1-1. She is the former Strikeforce Women’s Featherweight Champion, and is one of the best strikers in the division. Even though she is a former champion, she is surrounded by controversy because she was found to be on anabolic steroids back in 2011 after her Hiroko Yamanaka bout. Now that she’s fighting under the Invicta promotion, she will look to build up her brand again in hopes of transitioning to the UFC. Santos has been one of the most dominant fighters in all of women’s MMA, utilizing her strength and viscous Muay Thai.
Coenen has been a pioneer for women’s mixed martial arts and is one of the most experienced. In her fighting career, she has amassed an impressive record of 21-5. She holds notable victories over Liz Carmouche and Sarah Kaufman. She is currently on a two fight winning streak, beating the likes of Romy Ruyssen and Fiona Muxlow. Coenen is one of the best grapplers women’s MMA, and it will be interesting to see what adjustments she makes when she squares off with Cyborg again.
This bout is a must-win situation for both fighters, as the winner may get a chance to fight for the UFC and challenge their bantamweight champion, Ronda Rousey or Miesha Tate, in what be a huge fight for women’s MMA.
