Melvin Guillard UFC

Ron Chenoy-USA Today Sports

UFC on Fox 8 featured an important lightweight bout between Mac Danzig and Melvin Guillard.  Both were fighting for their relevancy in the lightweight division, and possibly even their UFC jobs.  Coming into this bout, it was well known that Guillard held the power advantage, but would he be able to keep this bout standing?

Well, he certainly did just that, clipping Danzig with a brutal jab in the second round.  Guillard followed it up with some brutal hammer fists, forcing the ref to step in.  It was a sterling performance from Guillard, one that puts his name right back in the mix in one of the most competitive divisions in the UFC.

Now, Guillard is 31-12-2-1 in his fighting career, and this impressive win potentially saved his job, as he was on a two-fight losing streak.  Guillard showed impressive takedown defense in the first and second round, which ultimately helped him land the viscous jab.  If Guillard can keep this momentum going, he’s going to be a scary match up for anyone in this division.

His knockout power is feared by many, and all he needed to work on was his ground game/submission defense.  It looks like he is filling up his technical holes in terms of the grappling, making him a viable threat to any fighter.

So what’s next for Guillard?  His latest loss was to Jamie Varner, which ended up being a split decision, so maybe that’s a potential rematch bout.  It would certainly be compelling, as both have been known to exchange words from time to time. Whatever is next for Guillard, it’s nice to see him utilize his striking in such devastating fashion.

Dana White Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor Can Beat Rafael dos Anjos

Things are getting interesting ahead of UFC 196. The headlining fight at that March 5 pay-per-view event will see UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor move up to lightweight to face the champion of that division Rafael dos Anjos. If McGregor succeeds he will become the first UFC fighter to hold belts in two different divisions simultaneously. The oddsmakers have McGregor as the favorite ahead of the fight. UFC president Dana White doesn’t necessarily hold the same opinion.
