UFC on Fox Sports 1 takes place on August 17, and features an important light heavyweight bout between Chael Sonnen and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Both fighters are veterans in the sport and will be looking to add to their already-impressive resumes.
Sonnen has been one of the most popular fighters in all of MMA over the recent years. His gift of gab is quite impressive to behold, and he usually backs up his talk inside the cage. This was the case in his first meeting with Anderson Silva, where Sonnen was able to go almost five rounds with the middleweight champ until succumbing to a triangle.
He lost to Silva in the rematch, and then to Jon Jones for the light heavyweight championship. Now, he gets the chance to redeem himself and build some momentum in his fighting career.
Much like Sonnen, Rua has also had an up-and-down career inside the UFC. He burst onto the UFC scene, defeating the likes of Chuck Liddell and then Lyoto Machida, which won him the light heavyweight belt. However, he was outmatched against Jones.
Rua is a legend of the sport, dominating the Pride promotion for many years. Despite losing to Dan Henderson and Alexander Gustafsson recently, he has always been able to put on exciting bouts and he will looking to do the same against Sonnen.
Sonnen needs this win badly to make him a viable threat in the UFC. He will always have a home with the UFC especially when it comes to his commentating career, but if he wants to remain relevant as a fighter, he will need a win against Rua.
For Rua, a win against Sonnen re-establishes himself in this light heavyweight division, and gives him the chance to build back some momentum in hopes of going on another title run.
