Bellator recently announced that they will be showcasing a pay-per-view event which will be headlined by Tito Ortiz vs. Rampage Jackson. It was also recently announced that Michael Chandler, who is the current lightweight champion, will take on former champ Eddie Alvarez, in what has the makings to be yet another classic.
Alvarez was once considered one of the best lightweights on the planet, but a submission loss to Chandler in their first outing took away all of his momentum. He then got locked up in a contract dispute with Bellator as he was trying to sign with the UFC. It looks like that dispute is finally coming to an end, which means Bellator fans will finally get to see him inside the cage.
In terms of the rematch, both Chandler and Alvarez have a lot on the line in this fight. For Chandler, he will be looking to prove he is the superior fighter and that he is truly one of the best lightweights in the world. For Alvarez, he is looking to rebuild his image after spending over a year out of MMA competition.
It has been rumored that Bellator offered Alvarez a deal where if he loses, he can walk away from his Bellator contract. However, if he wins, he will have to do a trilogy match with Chandler. So, this is arguably Alvarez’s most important fight to date. He wants to restore his image and prove the first fight with Chandler was a fluke.
So who will come out the victor in this highly-anticipated lightweight championship rematch?
