Chael Sonnen Submits Shogun Rua, Proves He’s Still Relevant
The main event of UFC on Fox Sports 1 featured a light heavyweight bout between Chael Sonnen and Shogun Rua. Entering this important bout, both fighters were coming off losses, and needed a win dearly to keep their fighting dreams alive.
Earlier in the first round, Sonnen was able to get Rua down, forcing Rua to work off his back. It would stay on the ground for most of the round, and Sonnen would be able to lock on a submission, guillotine, forcing Rua to tap. This finish was amazing, as many fighters and media felt that Sonnen was simply going to grind out a decision.
Well he certainly proved the doubters wrong, and this is his second finish inside the UFC. It was a much-needed win for Sonnen, who before this fight was on a two-fight losing streak. However, these losses were to the best pound-for-pound fighters in Anderson Silva and Jon Jones. Going up against Rua, it appeared he was the superior athlete and wrestler.
Now, Sonnen is now 28-13-1 and it’s amazing to seem him still developing his skills, especially in the grappling/submission department. After the win, Sonnen called out Wanderlei Silva, in what would be a compelling 205 lb bout if it’s indeed booked. For Rua, he may want to hang up the gloves, as it’s clear he is never going to challenge for the title again with this recent loss. Sonnen is always entertaining to watch both inside and outside the cage. Congrats to Sonnen on the impressive submission victory.
