It has been reported that UFN 29 will feature a welterweight bout between Rousimar Palhares and Mike Pierce. This will be Palhares’s first time fighting at welterweight, and it will be interesting to see if he can even make weight, as he was a huge middleweight.
Pierce has been on an impressive streak as of late, winning four straight. Two of those wins were finishes, showcasing Pierce’s lethal power that makes him a tough outing for any welterweight matched up against him. Pierce is one of the best welterweights in the world, and has only suffered close losses in his UFC tenure to Josh Koscheck, Jon Fitch, and Johny Hendricks.
Palhares burst onto the UFC scene showcasing his lethal leg lock game. However, he has been on a slump, losing back-to-back fights in dramatic fashion to Alan Belcher and Hector Lombard. If he wants to keep his career going inside the UFC, he will need to resurrect it, which is why he’s moved down to the welterweight division.
Similar fighters in the middleweight division have also transitioned to the welterweight division in hopes of having more success in terms of utilizing their size and strength. Demian Maia has arguably been the most successful as he’s won three straight victories in dominating fashion.
Palhares will be looking for similar results, and it will be interesting to see if he can lock up one of his patented leg locks on Pierce.
