UFC 164: Ben Rothwell Still Relevant With Win Over Brandon Vera
An exciting heavyweight bout was on full display tonight at UFC 164 between Ben Rothwell and Brandon Vera. Both fighters were needing a win, as their latest outings in the octagon ended in a loss. For rounds one and two, it was a very competitive fight.
Vera looked good, landing some good kicks to Rothwell, who couldn’t land anything significant at first. Everything changed in the third, as Rothwell started moving like a madman. It was a sight to be seen, because this type of movement is rarely seen from a heavyweight. Rothwell was able to capitalize on this movement, rocking Vera with some good shots that sent him to the canvas. Rothwell followed it up with some punches, and the ref was forced to stop the bout in the third round.
It was an amazing win for Rothwell, who remains relevant again in this heavyweight division, which is currently reigned by Cain Velasquez. After the win, Rothwell went on to call out Travis Browne, which would be an amazing fight to see. Both fighters have exceptional power, so it would be a true test for both of them. This win couldn’t have come at a better time for Rothwell, as he was coming off a submission loss to Gabriel Gonzaga.
For Vera, he is now on a two fight losing streak, and he needs to rethink his career if he wants to remain relevant in either the light heavyweight or heavyweight division. It was an impressive performance from Rothwell, and if he can string a few wins together, he certainly could make a run at the title.
