An important UFC flyweight bout took place tonight in Brazil between Joseph Benavidez and Jussier Formiga. Coming into this bout, the winner was more than likely next in line to challenge for the title, which is currently being held by Demetrious Johnson.
Benavidez controlled the action from the beginning to the end of the bout. Benavidez landed some good leg kicks and punches, pressing Formiga backyard. Benavidez was able to put together an impressive combination, landing a brutal knee to the body of Jussier. The shot sent him to the canvas, and Benavidez was able to finish the fight off with strikes on the ground.
Joseph is now on a three-fight winning streak, and he certainly deserves a title shot. Benavidez has always been an exciting flyweight, and he has some of the best finishing capabilities in the division. With the recent addition of head-striking coach Duane Ludwig, Joseph has been able to sharpen his striking skills. It was an impressive striking display put on tonight by Joseph, and he is getting better with every fight.
For Formiga, this was probably his last chance at making a run for the title. He is one of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners in this division, but his striking has never been great. This was clearly evident tonight, and he needs to enhance his striking abilities if he ever wants to remain relevant in the flyweight division.
Congrats to Benavidez who cements his status tonight in Brazil as being one of the best flyweights in the world.
