Ronaldo Souza TKO’s Yushin Okami; Proves Title Contender Status
UFC Fight Night 28 featured an important middleweight bout between Ronaldo Souza and Yushin Okami. Both fighters were looking to win in hopes of getting a title shot, so their willingness to win was at an all-time high. Souza hurt Okami early in the round, landing shot after shot. However, Okami recovered, getting the fight back up to the feet. Souza pressed forward, and landed a huge right to Okami again.
The punch sent Okami to the canvas, and Souza was able to land blow after blow until the ref stepped in. It was an impressive win from Souza, who is now 2-0 inside the UFC. This win sent waves throughout the middleweight division, which is currently being reigned over by Chris Weidman right now.
Weidman is set to rematch Anderson Silva for the title, but Souza could be next in line for the title shot. Souza is considered one of the most dangerous fighters when it comes to jiu jitsu, but his stand up has improved by leaps and bounds. This was clearly evident tonight, as he was able to put on a striking clinic against Okami, who is one of the most successful middleweights in the division.
This win solidifies Souza as being the next big thing in the division, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for him. It’s going to be interesting to see if the UFC books him with another opponent, or simply gives him the next crack at the belt.
