Hot off the presses! Nate Diaz and Gray Maynard are set to fight on Nov. 30 at the Ultimate Fighter 18 Finale. This will be the third time that these two lightweight contenders have met. The first time they met, Diaz was able to choke out Maynard with a guillotine choke. The second time, Maynard picked up split-decision victory.
This is a big fight for both of these fighters, since both Diaz and Maynard are coming off disappointing losses. Diaz, after losing to Ben Henderson for the title, suffered the first knockout of his career after he was caught flush with a head kick from Josh Thomson. Subsequently, he was fined $20,000 for using a homophobic slur on his Twitter page and was suspended for 90 days. It is safe to say that Diaz needs this win to turn his career around.
Also a perennial contender, Maynard is trying to rebound from a knockout loss to TJ Grant. Prior to that fight, Maynard picked up a split-decision win over Clay Guida, which was a less than thrilling fight, to say the least. Maynard needs this win to show the division that he still means business and is up to snuff with the top 10.
With Maynard and his collegiate wrestling against the ultra-slick submission game of Diaz, tt is an interesting clash of style. Diaz has also fallen in love with his hands in his past few fights, and it would be extremely exciting to see the accuracy of Diaz against the raw power of Maynard’s boxing game. Whoever is able to win this fight will stay at the top of the division.
