UFC: Dominick Cruz Needs to Be Stripped of Bantamweight Title

Dominick Cruz

It hurt to write the title. Not just because I am a Dominick Cruz fan (I am), but because he got injured. He did not lose, and he did not do anything illegal. It was just something that happens to all fighters — he got injured and then he got re-injured. It stinks, but as the greats say, the show must go on. The UFC needs to strip Cruz of his bantamweight title because the division needs to move on.

When the UFC were able to acquire the WEC and absorb its lower weight classes, fight fans everywhere rejoiced. It was about time the smaller guys get a ticket to the big show and so far, they have shown up in spades. It is now typical for the smaller divisions to steal the show on fight nights because of their speed and athleticism.

There have also been constant finishes (except for the featherweights, but that’s a topic for another time). The only complaint that we have heard is that there is not necessarily a lot of depth to the smaller divisions, and one of the divisions is the bantamweight division, which Cruz is the defending champion.

Renan Barao is now the defending interim champion of the bantamweight division, and there is a pretty good reason to crown him the undisputed champion.

If Barao becomes to the undisputed champion, then the division can move along. It would break the logjam of contenders, start setting up fights that the fans want to see, and the UFC could finally start to promote a champion again. The division needs a face for their belt — Cruz cannot be it because he hasn’t fought in two years.

Barao has defended the interim belt and has proved to be the best of the best. Give him the title.
