An interesting featherweight bout has been inked by the UFC between contenders Dustin Poirier and Diego Brandao. Both of these featherweights are a couple wins a way from a title shot, so this is an important fight for both fighters at this point in their careers.
Poirier is one of the most exciting fighters in the featherweight division. He has solid hands, and is very good at finding the openings on the ground and locking up submissions when they present themselves. His bout with Erik Koch was a sterling performance, and it proved that Poirier does indeed have what it takes to defeat the better strikers in the division.
A win over Barao would cement his status as being an elite featherweight, and may even give him access to a title shot, which is currently being held by Jose Aldo.
Barao is arguably the most powerful puncher in the division, and he has a great jiu jitsu game. Barao is coming off an important win over Daniel Pineda, a bout that was exciting for much of the first. However, both fighters started to slow down, which has always been Barao’s biggest problem in terms of fighting elite competition.
He can’t have this happen again against Poirier, who has always had good conditioning. A lot is on the line in this fight, and the winner keeps the momentum going for their careers as they look to continue making noise in the ranks of very competitive featherweight division.
