A pivotal welterweight bout takes place on Oct. 9, 2013 between dynamic grapplers Jake Shields and Demian Maia. Both will be looking to move up the welterweight ladder, and if the winner can get an impressive finish, he has a great opportunity to challenge for the title, which is currently being held by Georges St. Pierre.
This bout has the makings to be an instant classic, as both are some of the best grapplers in all of MMA. Coming into this bout, Shields is looking to keep his momentum going after a much-needed split decision win over the dangerous striker in Tyron Woodley. Shields was able to pressure Woodley up against the cage, landing a lot of kicks to his legs and body. Shields was successful in taking away Woodley’s power, but it wasn’t a very thrilling affair. Shields will be hoping his bout with Maia is more compelling.
Maia is one of the hottest prospects in the welterweight division right now. His world class, elite grappling has allowed him to go 3-0 in the welterweight division. Maia doesn’t have to worry about fighting guys who are bigger and stronger than him at welterweight, allowing him to really work his jiu jitsu game. This was clear in his bout with the always durable Rick Story, in which Maia was able to quickly take Story down and submit him. Another breakout win for Maia was hit bout with Jon Fitch, where he was able to control Fitch on the ground for all three rounds.
This welterweight fight should be an instant classic. The winner will put his name in the hat to challenge for the title.
