UFC Fight Night 29: Jake Shields Scores Impressive Upset Over Demian Maia
Tonight in Brazil, UFC Fight Night 29 featured an intriguing welterweight bout between Jake Shields and Demian Maia. Both of these fighters are some of the best in terms of Jiu Jitsu and grappling, and they were looking to get an impressive win under their belt in hopes of vying for the title, which is currently being held by Georges St. Pierre.
This fight was razor close each round. Round 1 was probably the closest. Maia was able to control the action in Rounds 4 and 5, where Shields was able to control Maia in Rounds 2 and 3. In the end, the judges ultimately awarded Jake Shields with the split decision. It’s a controversial call, and a weird one because it was thought that if the fight were close, Maia would get the call, especially in his home country.
This was not the case, however, and Shields moves his record to a 29-6-1-1. Shields is now on a two-fight winning streak, and this is arguably his biggest win in his fighting career. Tonight, Shields did some amazing things on the ground. He was able to control Maia in Rounds 2 and 3, which is something not many fighters are able to do once they go to the ground with Maia. Shields would even reverse Maia on several occasions, which is a testament to the type of Jiu Jitsu skills that Shields possesses.
Now, Maia will have to go back to the drawing board, and Shields moves one step closer to a title shot. Congrats to Shields.
