Sarah Kaufman and Jessica Eye went to UFC 166, which took place in Houston tonight. Both fighters were looking to pick up an impressive victory in hopes of getting a title shot in the bantamweight division, where Ronda Rousey is currently the champ. Both of these fighters brought the action to each other, and it was an exciting bout from start to finish.

In the end, Eye was awarded the split decision, but it was razor close, and Kaufman certainly could have been awarded the win. This is Eye’s biggest win to date, which is quite amazing  because it was her UFC debut. So many times do fighters have octagon jitters, but this wasn’t the case for Eye. She was able to remain calm and focused on the task at hand.

She landed more shots on Kaufman and her speed may have been the difference. She showcased a brilliant jab, and she is one step close to a bantamweight title shot, which will be defended by Rousey against Miesha Tate. Eye has certainly progressed as a fighter over the years, and it was quite a feat to defeat Kaufman, who is arguably the best striker in the women’s bantamweight division.

Now, Kaufman will have to go back to the drawing board in hopes of building some momentum. Eye had a break-out performance tonight, which was predicated on her hand speed and combinations. Congrats to Eye on the impressive performance, which was her first UFC fight.

Eye didn’t land more shots on Kaufman except in the first round (same overall strikes…Jessica had 2 more significant strikes)…she was outstruck in rounds 2 and 3 and for the fight it was 87-65 (significant strikes) and 131-93(total strikes), both in favor of Kaufman.

Still, a close fight. I thought Eye edged Kaufman in 1 and Kaufman edged Eye in 2. Kaufman clearly won round 3…I’m not sure what fight the judge who gave Rd 3 to Jessica was watching, but it wasn’t this one.
