UFC 166 featured an exciting welterweight bout between Nate Marquardt and Hector Lombard. Both were looking to score an impressive finish in hopes of moving up the welterweight ladder, where Georges St. Pierre currently sits at the top. This was Lombard’s first fight at welterweight, and he delivered a sensational KO win in the first round.
Lombard has always had issues with his cardio, but this wasn’t tested, as he was able to quickly land heavy shots on Marquardt. Marquardt went to the canvas, and Lombard continued to punch until the ref stepped in. Now, Lombard is 1-0 in his career at welterweight, and he will be looking to move up the ladder in hopes of a title shot.
It was a great performance from Lombard, proving he is an elite fighter with some of the most feared striking capabilities in all of the UFC. However, he has had issues with his conditioning, and going forward, it’s going to be interesting to see if he can continue to make the cut down to the welterweight division.
For Marquardt, he may get his walking papers after this fight, as he has now lost two straight by way of devastating finish inside the UFC. He’s always been entertaining to watch, so he could certainly get some wins and make it back to the UFC. For Lombard, he put the welterweight division on notice, and it’s going to be fun to see who the UFC matches him up with next. A great opponent for him would be against Thiago Alves, Dong Hyun Kim or Jake Ellenberger.
