An epic middleweight bout takes place this weekend, UFC Fight Night 30, between two elite fighters in Lyoto Machida and Mark Munoz. Both have trained together in a past, so it’s going to be interesting to see if they can implement a strategy, based upon what they know about each other.

Machida comes into this fight ready to make a statement in the middleweight division. This will be his first outing down to this division, and the decision to cut down was based upon his latest performance against Phil Davis, where he ended up losing a split decision. In the bout, Machida never really pressed the action, which is predominately why he lost. He will be looking to get back that killer instinct that made him a champion in the light heavyweight division.

Munoz is looking to build off his latest victory, which was against Tim Boetsch. In this bout, Munoz looked like his old, dominant self, utilizing his wrestling and landing some devastating shots on top. Munoz has been an elite middleweight for some time now, and he has the chance to fight for the belt if he can beat Machida, who will more than likely be his toughest test to date.

This will be an interesting stylistic match, as Munoz has the better wrestling and Machida will be the more competent striker. The bout may come down to who can implement their strategy first and who wants it more. Both have a chance to fight for the middleweight title, which is currently held by Chris Weidman.
