Lyoto Machida is coming off a brilliant head-kick KO over Mark Munoz, which took place at UFC Fight Night 30. It was a brilliant finish for Machida, who was making his debut at middleweight. With the win, Machida becomes an instant contender for the belt, which is currently being held by Chris Weidman.
Weidman is set to face Anderson Silva in a rematch that goes down at UFC 168, and it appears Machida wants Vitor Belfort for his next opponent. Machida told MMAFighting.com:
“Vitor Belfort is the best option for me right now. I want to fight him. It would be the best fight for me right now because he’s well ranked in the middleweight division.”
Currently, Belfort is set to face Dan Henderson in a light heavyweight bout that should be a war. Regardless of the outcome, Machida has his sights set on Belfort, who has certainly revitalized his career as of late in the middleweight division. Belfort has been able to showcase a diverse kicking game in his last bouts with Michael Bisping and Luke Rockhold. It would be interesting to see how he and Machida would fair on the feet.
A Belfort bout for Machida makes a lot of since as they have proved time and time again to have finishing abilities in their punches and kicks. It would be a great treat for the fans, and the winner would more than likely be next in line for a title shot.
