Two previous winners of the Ultimate Fighter were involved in a grinding battle of submission attempts at UFC Fight for the Troops 3 in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Michael Chiesa and Colton Smith were looking to bounce back after each suffering losses in their last bouts.

In the opening round, it looked as though “Maverick”, The Ultimate Fighter Season 15 winner, would register yet another submission victory when he locked Smith into a body triangle and worked tenaciously to sink in a fight-finishing choke. However, the army staff sergeant showed strong resolve as he was actually able to work himself out of danger and had Chiesa in big trouble with a guillotine attempt of his own. Chiesa escaped by slamming Smith to the canvas.

In Round 2, it was more of the same type of intensity. Both fighters were working against the fence when Chiesa executed a perfect throw. Smith landed squarely on his head and seemed to be stunned, and it didn’t take long for Chiesa to take advantage. He sunk in a rear naked choke that forced Smith to tap at 1:41.

It was a strong effort from Chiesa, who made amends for his first career loss to Jorge Masvidal in his last time out. He’s now 10-1 in his career with eight submission wins. As for Smith, he’s now dropped back to back contests. He was stopped at UFC 160 by Robert Whittaker and is now just 3-3 in his career. His career has taken a step back after winning the Ultimate Fighter 16 finale against Mike Ricci.
